Chapter 1 Kelly There's a moment between impact and realisation that you're about to hit the ground a wise person once said that; when you fall down you are in free fall, you don't realise that gravity is going to pull you down and the minute gravity pulls you down that's when you can feel the impact and pain of the events that had just transpired and falling down isn't falling down if you don't feel pain . Is the realisation that you're hurt and it's accepting that you're in pain and you had no control over what had just happened.

The suitcases dropped from my hands as they slid down the stairs along with her. In that frozen moment, her body leaned backward, and everything seemed to slow down. My heart thumped in my chest, a hollow beat echoing. I noticed her futile attempt to grab the railing, fingers slipping, and the faint sound of fabric tearing as her hand instinctively reached out for support.

Rita suddenly walked straight into something solid. The impact was hard. Her phone flew out of her hand. Her bag slid off her shoulder and hit the ground. Her water bottle bounced and rolled across the floor with a clatter. The force of the collision sent her body staggering backwards, her arms reaching for something to hold onto and finding nothing. Her feet tangled beneath her and she felt herself falling. She closed her eyes and braced for the floor. Hands caught her. Warm. Firm. They wrapped around her arms and pulled her forward, stopping her fall, drawing her back to her feet. She felt the grip tighten for a second, steadying her, and then the hands let go.

I scrambled back, my spine hitting the bathroom door. It hadn't clicked shut, so the second I leaned on it, it swung wide. The floor vanished. Gravity took over, and I started to go down, falling backward into the bathroom. "Ah—!" I clawed at the air, desperate for a handhold. My fingers clamped onto something cold and metallic. The sharp, heavy sound of a buckle snapping open echoed in the small space. My center of gravity was still failing, but then a literal iron bar of an arm slammed around my waist.

I reached for it. And the floor tilted. Not gradually. Not slowly. All at once, as if someone had grabbed the kitchen by its corners and shaken it. The ceiling became the floor. The floor became the ceiling. My hand missed the toast and found the edge of the counter instead, and my grip — weak, unreliable, the grip of hands that had lost their strength — slipped, and I was falling. I never felt the impact.

The fall was endless. Stone, ash, and shards of ruin tore past them as gravity ripped them into the chasm. Sera clutched at the air, her fingers stretching toward that small, glowing hand, but the earth crumbled faster than she could reach. The darkness swallowed them whole. Adrien’s arms locked around her waist, pulling her against him as they plummeted. “Hold on!” His voice was a ragged roar, almost drowned out by the howling void.

With careful precision, she shifted her body to try and bridge the gap between the bed and the wheelchair. But gravity was a cruel mistress, and her sense of balance betrayed her. Her hand slipped, and her body began to lurch. A sharp gasp slipped from her lips—a prelude to the inevitable. And then she fell. The sound of her collision with the floor—a harsh, unforgiving thud—shattered the stillness of the night.

Panic grabbed Vanadine’s chest as his left hand fell from the pavement. He hung by his right for a few seconds before his fingers gave out and he was scrabbling for purchase, fingers ripping at the soil and rock as he picked up speed falling down the almost vertical surface. All thoughts fell from his mind as his brain focussed entirely on stopping him from certain death. There was nothing to grab, nothing to catch hold of and he felt the phantom of death hovering at his shoulder. The drop would be over soon, the impact sudden and his death brief, leaving his broken body for the scavengers.

He had a large ring on his index finger, and his palm was dry and broad. Evelyn did not know what had possessed her, but she placed her hand in his before the strength from his palm pulled her up steadily. He was quite a gentleman; he let go of her hand after pulling her up. Evelyn’s legs and feet were a little numb after she stood up because she had been sitting for too long. When she was about to take a step, she suddenly stumbled and almost fell. The man held her waist in time, which saved her from the embarrassment of falling. However, she still fell into the man’s embrace because of her unstable center of gravity, and her face was pressed directly against the man’s chest.

I definitely wouldn't. She tightened the straps on her hands and, exhaling, tried to grab onto the highest ledge. The hands did not obey, the darkness closed inside made the already exhausted body sluggish and weak. I managed to get about a third when my trembling hand could not bear the rest of the weight, and I fell down. The landing was not pleasant. I was just groaning and rubbing my bruised bottom when a puzzled Luerian face appeared in the gap.
