"Now." The window was painted shut. I didn't bother opening it. I punched through the glass with a fist wrapped in violet void, the shards freezing in mid-air, suspended by the particular gravity of a power that didn't acknowledge physics. We dropped two stories. I slowed our fall without thinking about it, the void reaching down into the earth and pushing back up, a cushion of absence. Austin hit the ground rolling. I hit it standing. "Since when can you fly?" he gasped.

He blinks. Now he is standing, on his feet, in the middle of a mediaeval village. Cobblestone streets, black smoke in the air. The smell of fire and rusted metal raided his nose. A bell rang, and Roy turned towards the sound. Then everything shifted. Gravity shifted. The world tilts sideways. He falls into the sky, not down but sideways, buildings scattering like feathers as he flies past, unable to control his momentum, villagers going about their lives as if the world hadn’t just betrayed physics for him.
