I pulled open the door, revealing a nearly empty shelf: a carton of sour milk, half a block of cheddar cheese, and a plastic container with two leftover slices of cold, congealed pepperoni pizza from two nights ago. It was pathetic, but it was all I had left after the bank froze my credit card.
I brought the plastic container over to the counter and opened it. Stan leaned down, sniffing the food with extreme suspicion.
"It won't poison you," I said softly, picking up a slice and handing it to him.
