For the first time, I realized that when it had appeared, I could see it clearly, even in the pitch darkness. My chest tightened. If the Nightwalker was here, I was in great danger. I groped through the shadows, trying to find my way, when I heard the guardian’s faint whisper. “You're immune to its darkness.” “What…why?” You have to go,” it said instead. “You need to save someone from that dark terror.” “What are you saying? You’re not making sense!” I spun around. “Where are you? Show yourself!” “I can’t. I have to hide.”

Letting one's secrets known is equal to handing one's weakness to others. Though Reagan is her teammate and best friend, she still hesitates to reveal her secrets. It's ingrained in her mind to never reveal. Never display your powers to an outsider, her parents' last words before they died. The Guild is a supernatural organization that includes all types of supernaturals. Their major goal is to kill the rogues. Any supernatural can turn a rogue but it has a different meaning for each one. For beasts or werewolves, rogue means giving in to their inner beast's urges, turning them into savages, feasting on others.

The whispers of darkness, once a distant echo, seemed to grow louder, a chilling symphony playing just beyond the edges of their awareness. Kai, now the esteemed Guardian Master, stood before a gathering of young guardians, their eyes wide with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension. He, the hero who had neutralized the warlord and banished the obelisk's darkness, bore the weight of his past victories and the looming uncertainties of the future. "The tapestry of darkness," he began, his voice seasoned with experience, "is woven from many threads. Entities, obelisks – they are but manifestations of a deeper threat, an insatiable hunger that seeks to consume the light."

I remembered a voice, the Goddess’s, begging for forgiveness as I became a living seal. I was a cage, I was a key, and I was a guardian. And that thing should never have touched my home. I ran toward it with my entire herd of shadows behind me. The impact caused the square to vanish beneath a black and silver shroud. My shadow wolves bit at his legs, his neck, and his branch-like ribs. Emmett cast his light into the hole in his chest. The Luna Goddess channeled silver down my back, not to do my work for me but to keep me from dying before I finished it. The god Night placed his hand on my shoulder in the midst of the battle, and for the first time, my shadows didn’t hurt.

I sighed a little out of relief and shook my head at the two gossip girls. "No, we didn't okay. Are you feeling alright now? Relieved of your curiosity?" They both hummed, unsatisfied with my answer. "Why is the guard coming in here?" Jasmine asked, furrowing her eyebrow as she looked at someone behind her. We all followed her stare where a tall man, with a sturdy, muscular physique was walking out of the forest toward where everyone was. He wore everything in black from his shoes to his shirt, making his figure look fierce. He stopped when he reached his Alpha and bowed his head a little to Xander, who looked uncertain of his presence.

I feel Welma and the blonde woman come to my aid as a hand rubs my back while they help me sit upright and bring a glass of water to my lips. Winter sighs to the side, the grave look on her face unwilling to be dispelled. “The Guardian is the only Demon capable of contending on a near even ground with your kind. With the help of a special sword bestowed on the Guardian, they can scale through the rage of your dark fire. And we’ve lost three of your kind to the malignant blade of that cursed sword….” Cold grips my being, and my chest pounds with great fear as she tapers off there. What does this mean then? That this mysterious Guardian is behind those Darklings and after my life? My lips trem

"Mother of darkness, hear my plea. Release my daughter, set her free!" I sliced my hand with the knife, letting my blood drip into the flames. They turned purple where my blood fell, hissing and spitting like angry snakes. The door to my secret room burst open. Two figures dressed in black stood in the doorway, their faces hidden by shadows. "Stop the ritual!" one of them yelled. "The Guardians," I said, not surprised they had found me. "You're too late." "Luna Winters," the second one said, stepping forward. "You don't understand what you're doing. The balance—"

Closer and hungrier. “The council served them.” The First Luna nodded. “Fenric served them.” Another nod. “Matthias serves them.” The words struck like lightning. Everything connected. Every betrayal, war, death and conspiracy. One enemy. One hidden force. One ancient darkness manipulating generations from the shadows. Ardyn stepped forward. “The guardian still protects the final seal.” The First Luna reached toward me. Silver light flowed from her hand into the blade. “If the seal breaks, the Shadow King will rise again.”

Especially since his whole fantasy was for there to be a shroud of mystery with us meeting. She continued, "I can give him your number and he can call and go over any other specifics with you. I realize it'll be dark but I don't know if there's anything special he wants you to wear or not wear, any special way he wants you to smell, that kind of thing. I think the whole premise of being in the dark is to heighten all of your other senses. He really wants the physical connection with you, without any pretense about who he is or who his family is or all that."
