His breath. My pulse climbing. My body remembered last night far too clearly. Maybe the cabinet was too small. Maybe the air was too thin. But both of us were breathing too fast. Another loud bang. I thought the monster NPC had found us. Every muscle in my body locked tight. But instead of chainsaw noise, a dramatic, overly sweet female voice floated in. “What if they find us?”

It got closer and closer, forcing me to scuttle away to the far end of the room. Someone stuck a key into the doorknob and turned it, opening the door. I closed my eyes. I couldn’t bear to see what was happening. I was sweating, on edge. Hives must’ve broke out on my skin cause I couldn’t stop scratching and itching. “Drink!” Hank’s familiar voice barked. I opened my eyes slowly and saw his hand extending toward me with a bottle of water.

“No more strays.” “Please. She’s not a stray. She’s a stray with style.” I tried to move again and nearly blacked out. “Shit. Do you have water, or do I have to bleed out on your nice floors for it?” He nodded to someone I couldn’t see. A moment later, a glass was pressed into my hand and I gulped it down, nearly choking on it. “Careful,” the Alpha said, eyes never leaving mine. The water burned going down, cold and sharp like it was trying to slice its way through my throat instead of soothe it.

I splashed some cool water on my face, trying to wake up, but then I stopped. There, on the side of my neck, was a small, dark mark. A hickey. I reached up and touched it with my fingertips. A flush crawled up my cheeks, and my breath hitched. Just looking at it brought everything back. I remembered the rough heat of his hands on my waist. I remembered the way he growled my name. I wanted him. Right now, even more than I had last night, I wanted to go to his room, crawl back into his arms, and stay there until the rest of the world disappeared.

Five seconds ago, I was whining about the sweltering heat in the RV, begging Hudson to use his extremely precious powers just to make me a damn popsicle. Then the memories flooded in.
