Kieran’s POV As dawn approached, I watched the horizon slowly brighten. The first rays of sunlight spilled over the freshly fallen snow, bathing the frozen ground in a soft golden glow. Streaks of orange and pink stretched across the sky, pushing back the darkness that had ruled the night. For a moment, it looked as though the two were fighting for the heavens, night refusing to let go while morning steadily pressed forward. But the battle was always brief. Time had already chosen its victor, and with each passing second, the darkness retreated until the day stood unchallenged.

The artificial dark sky above Lycan territory beginning to lighten, the coven’s collective weather-working fragmenting as its casters fled. Dawn returning. Actual dawn, this time — pink at the eastern edge, the light finding its way back as the dark magic retreated. Kael appeared at my left, shifted back to human form, a cut along his jaw that was already closing. He looked at the territory around us — at the dissipating shadow creatures, at the retreating witches visible at the forest’s perimeter, at the warriors beginning the process of accounting and tending. He looked at me. “Eleven,” I said. “Eleven down or gone.”

The northern wind arrived late and stank of metal; even the horses pinned their ears and rolled eyes rimmed in white. “The Sun Court,” Varyn said, low. “We’re close.”
