The library was still open, but the librarian was just getting ready to leave.
“Oh, what is Her Highness doing in the library at a time like this?” the librarian asked, poring over the rim of her pince-nez glasses.
Madam Fern, the librarian, was a thin, irritable woman who looked like an underfed vulture. “Your Highness?” she repeated suspiciously.
Clara, who had never imposed her authority before, asked in a kind smile, “I am thinking if I could use the library, please? And probably borrow some if I found any.”
