Starting today, your allowance will be structured as base salary plus performance plus attendance bonus. "Base pay is 250 dollars a month, enough to keep you from starving. "To prepare you for a high-pressure work environment, I’ll conduct random inspections. Fail, and your pay gets docked." When I ran a 104°F fever, he cut my attendance bonus, saying my physical resilience didn't meet standards. When I forgot to submit a weekly report because I was buried in schoolwork, he froze all my money. To stay alive, I went behind his back and sold blood at the hospital. At the end of the semester, I held my transcript and scholarship certificate, thinking I had finally earned the highest rating. But my father looked at me without a trace of warmth. "Your S+ bonus has been reallocated. The company decided to invest it in your brother, Harry. He has more potential." I looked at the 100-dollar "consolation prize" he handed me and laughed. "Halo, sobat .... Gimana kabarmu?" jawab Ronald saat dia mengangkat telepon. "Tolong! Aku nggak tahan lagi." Carissa terengah-engah, suaranya terdengar serak. "Sobat, ada apa? Kamu di mana sekarang? Aku jemput ya!" kata Ronald, mulai panik. Suara Carissa semakin tak karuan sambil menangis. "Aku di taman ... tolong, kamu harus datang .... Aku nggak bisa gini terus .... Dia mutusin aku .... Hatiku sakit banget! Sakit ...." Setiap kata terdengar gemetar, seakan hanya bicara saja sudah tidak ada tenaga lagi. "Taman yang mana? Tunggu aku, bertahanlah. Jangan mikir macem-macem. Aku janji bakal ada di sisimu. Kirim lokasimu ya?" Suara Ronald pun ikut gemetar. Hening. Cuma ada suara isak tangis tertahan dari seberang telepon. "Halo? Kamu dengar aku? Tolong kirim lokasi kamu biar aku bisa cari," pintanya, rasa takut mulai mencengkram perasaannya. Dia tahu Carissa sedang tak bisa berpikir jernih dan bisa saja nekat melakukan hal bodoh. "Carissa, ayolah. Kasih tahu aja kamu di mana. Aku sudah jalan, sudah di mobil," kata Ronald lagi, suara mesin mobil terdengar keras di latar belakang. Setelah beberapa detik yang terasa lama banget, HP-nya bergetar. Lokasi Carissa masuk ke HP-nya. Dia langsung tancap gas tanpa pikir panjang. Ban mobil berdecit kencang waktu dia ngebut di jalanan. Saat akhirnya sampai di taman, Ronald melihat Carissa duduk di bangku, kepala menunduk, bahunya gemetar. Ronald langsung lari menghampiri dan mengangkat dagu Carissa pelan-pelan. Dia kaget. Wajah Carissa pucat pasi, mata tertutup, air mata sudah mengering di pipi, dan mukanya terlihat kesakitan. Ronald tarik Carissa ke dalam pelukannya. Untuk beberapa saat, Carissa diam, lalu badannya jadi lemas. Tangannya terkulai di sisi tubuh. Panik langsung menyerbu Ronald. Carissa pingsan. Ronald langsung menggendong Carissa, membawanya ke mobil, dan menidurkannya di kursi belakang. Dia lalu banting pintu, nyalakan mesin, dan langsung ngebut ke rumah sakit.
