I needed an excuse to end the phone call quickly so I used probably the lamest excuse in the book. "That's great. I'm so happy and I can't wait to meet but I'm late for a meeting and I need to go. I love you. Bye." I ended the call without listening to his response. I needed some time to get over the shock of what he had just told me.

At my breaking point, I once broke down in tears and asked, "Layne, will you only truly belong to me if we get married? Then let's get married…" His eyes had turned red. He held me, thinking it over, but he couldn't give me the answer I wanted. "Aren't we already happy like this?" Now, hearing those same words again, I didn't even have the strength to argue. I looked at him. "Layne, let's end—" A sudden wave of nausea hit me. My stomach twisted violently, and my whole body shook. Layne rushed forward to steady me. "What's wrong? Your stomach acting up again?"

Mira hurriedly said, feeling flustered that they had caused grief to the old couple who had always been kind to them “Please don’t cry. We don’t want the supplies… please don’t cry.” Maria hurriedly grabbed Mira’s hand shaking her head “Child, these are tears of joy, not sorrow. Thank you…” “Huh?” Mira stared blankly, forgetting to pull her hand back. “To be honest with you, we are at the end of our rope….” Maria poured out her heart and all the troubles they have had since last month. Mira touched her nose feeling slightly guilty; she too had ditched Joe’s and gone to the city to shop, considering she could buy more things for less money.

Zack smiled sadly and several tears dropped. "I thought those were just what happiness is to me...until he...until he left papa... Why did my world come crumbling down when he left? Why did the happiness I thought I had...suddenly vanish... I can no longer feel it after he left..." Zack continued with pain in his voice.
