I slipped. Comically, slowly. But more than the fall, I froze.
Instead of helping me, Hugo fell beside me.

“So you wouldn’t feel alone,” he replied, grinning broadly.
I lightly hit his arm, then burst into laughter, a sound so free, like a version of myself I hadn’t heard in a long time. A version that had once forgotten what it felt like to be happy without burden.
