he hinted and gave me a wink, before reading the message I wrote for him on the back of the card. It was a simple,“Happy birthday, Sam! I wish for all your dreams to come true. You can make it happen if you believe in yourself.” It was something I saw online, but I could relate to it. He was happy, like a child before Christmas. It warmed my heart, I was able to bring joy to a fellow painter with my presents.

Holding the brush pointed at his face as he just painted on his face making a voice gasp beside him. “Oh Takie- you are getting the colours all over you,” a soft gentle voice said snapping the little Takeshi to stop what he was doing. “Oh am I doing that? I’m sorry mama!” the little Takeshi smiles with the red paint almost all over his face. Turning his head towards the mother who has black long hair reaching up to her waist. Tied into a high ponytail, along with wearing the white sundress spread around her. “Mama!! Here here!! he teased, laughing. Valentine smiled quietly from the floor, where she was flipping through some bridal magazines. Neat and efficient she was; her hair was tied back without undue fuss, and her cheeks were blessed with the unmistakable, dyed early-pregnancy hue of cravings. "Tell me about it my love. I swear, finding the right shade for flowers is going to be more difficult than anything I've ever done, Arnulfo." Arnulfo slumped forward, his elbows lying on his knees. "We could always elope you know," he teased, the glint in his dark eyes all too tempting. "Fly somewhere private, just us. No stress, no seating charts, no arguments over what dessert to serve."

It turned out to be just Maddox coming in. “You ready for your first lesson on finding the way to a woman’s heart?” “I sent flowers to her this morning. And to Valerie.” Hazel had sent me a picture of Valerie holding her flowers and beaming. Her text of thanks ended in two kisses and a heart. When I responded and asked for a picture of her with her flowers, I didn’t like what I saw. Hazel was pale, and although she was smiling, it didn’t reach her eyes. I had a lot to make up for.

Asides the mess Charlotte made though. My heart suddenly squeezed as I took in a picture frame on the wall. It was a picture of Valerie and a fluffy puppy, Grandpa was in the background smiling brightly alongside Valerie while I stood by the side, with a deep scowl on my face. Totally destroying the happiness in the picture. I stared at a smiling slightly younger version of Valerie, her plump lips were stretched in a happy laughter, her green eyes sparkling, even in the picture. And the memories came flowing back. I remembered it was Valerie's birthday that day and Grandpa got her a puppy as a present.

Victor stepped back just enough to appear as though he had only just arrived. Silas collided gently into his leg. “Victor!” Victor forced a warm smile. “Hey there, champion.” Silas held up the drawing proudly. “I made this.” Victor took the paper slowly. Three stick figures. A family. His gaze lingered on the third figure longer than necessary. “Very nice,” he said calmly. Silas pointed to the drawing. “I’m trying to figure out who this one is.” Victor’s smile held steady. “I see.” Silas nodded.

Harley says, wiping his tears. "It's okay, bubba." I say, kissing his head and smoothing his hair down. He opens the piece of paper and smiles when he sees a drawing of two stick figures, one being small and one being big, the small one being Kai and the big one being Vixen. There's a heart in the middle and it's colored in and outside the lines and- awww, she wrote her name at the bottom. "It's beautiful, baby. Thank you." Vixen says, kissing her cheek.

I look at his brown eyes with a pitiful expression as I empathize with him. "Yeah, I am. Today is the anniversary. I will carry it to the cemetery as a gift for her where she rests." He takes his book out of his bag and shows me the drawing. It was just stunning. She looks like a deity with her light brown eyes, long wavy hair, long, thick eyelashes, and beautiful brown melanin skin. In the bottom right corner of the drawing, I found the message "To my love Valentina, forever and always," along with a red rose. She has always had a soft spot for roses.

Jared, nudged Lorenzo and whispered, “We have to do something to cheer Mom up. She’s been like this all day.” The younger of the two nodded in agreement, a small pout on his face as he studied his mom. “But what can we do?” Valentina, who had been quietly observing, piped up, “I have an idea! Let’s make her a surprise!” The boys’ eyes lit up with excitement as they eagerly awaited Valentina’s plan. “We can each make a card for her,” Valentina continued. “We’ll fill them with drawings and write down all the things we love about her. And then, we’ll pick some flowers from the garden to go with them.”

I smiled as I clasped the necklace around my neck. He stood across from me, grinning like an idiot. This Valentine’s Day may have started off as a complete disaster, but the ending wasn’t that bad at all.
