The whole 'accidentally falls into the protagonist's lap' scenario feels so tired now. It's usually some variation of a klutzy girl tripping over air, spilling her books, and landing right in the guy's arms. That meet-cute is practically a genre requirement, but it removes any agency. I'd love to see a harem plot where the central person deliberately seeks out their partners, or the connections form through shared work or a common goal instead of perpetual awkwardness.

Another one I'm weary of is the 'first girl' trope. The very first love interest introduced, often a childhood friend or the girl next door, almost never wins. She exists to be safe, familiar, and ultimately left behind as the protagonist explores more 'exciting' options. It sets up a weird dynamic where stability is framed as boring. The childhood friend in 'Love Hina' is a classic example—she had zero chance from the start, and it always left a sour taste.

Power imbalances are baked in but rarely examined. The protagonist often holds some form of leverage, like being the only competent person in a club, the heir to something, or possessing a unique skill. The harem forms around that status, not the person. I keep wondering if any of these characters would stick around if that external power vanished. The relationships feel transactional, built on convenience and proximity in a shared living space or school club, which makes the eventual 'choice' ring hollow.

You see it handled in wildly different ways depending on the genre’s mood. In pure wish-fulfillment stories, rivalries often feel like staged competitions—everyone gets a turn to shine, but the outcome is rarely in doubt, which can be comforting in a predictable way. I’m more drawn to series where the rivalry has real narrative teeth, where a contender might actually win the protagonist’s focus, or where the rivalry itself becomes the central relationship.

There’s a specific dynamic I find in some webcomics where the 'rivals' are functionally co-conspirators, using their competition as a cover for a deeper, collaborative bond that excludes the oblivious lead. It flips the script from vying for attention to building something separate, which is infinitely more interesting to me than another round of jealousy-driven antics.

The handling often reveals what the story values: is it about the protagonist’s choice, or the rivals’ own journeys? The latter tends to leave a stronger impression, even if it’s messier.

Seriously, it's about making every single interest feel like a choice the reader could root for, not just background furniture. I get so frustrated when a series introduces ten characters and only develops two.

Some of the best ones, like 'We Never Learn', treat each route with its own mini-arc in the main story, giving you a real sense of who that person is beyond their trope. The worst offenders pile on archetypes without any individual growth; you end up with a 'genki girl', a 'cool beauty', and a 'shy one' who never evolve past those labels.

Balance isn't just screen time, it's narrative weight. Who gets to challenge the MC? Who comforts them? Who has a life outside of them? If you can't imagine a character existing meaningfully without the protagonist, they're probably not balanced well.
