I said to no one in particular. I carried the cake to the staff break room where two healers were drinking tea. Their exhausted expressions brightened when they saw me. "Is that cake?" asked one, a young beta healer named Mark. I nodded. "It's my birthday. Would you like some?" Their enthusiastic response made me laugh. Soon we were joined by others—the overnight staff, a few ambulatory patients. The cake wasn't large, but I cut it into tiny portions so everyone could have a taste. "Happy birthday, Healer Bennett," said an elderly gamma wolf who'd been admitted with moon fever. "Turning thirty is a milestone for she-wolves."

There was a giant three-layer cake on the table. The bright candlelight swayed in the wind, like the stars shining in the night sky. "Happy birthday," a gentle voice said from behind. Today was her birthday? Shocked, Hazel looked at the calendar hanging on the wall. It was June 12th. 'Oh my God! It really was my birthday,' thought she. She even forgot it herself, and she didn't expect that he would remember it!

She laughed, “Well it didn’t slip any of ours.” She went into the kitchen and brought out a big sheet cake with a black wolf in the center. It read, “Happy Birthday Zariah and Onyx.” I loved that she included my wolf in the message. I smiled, “Thank you so much. This is really sweet of you.” She handed a knife to me and I started slicing it. I gasped, “I love chocolate cake. Is that strawberries between the layers?” Grandma Izzy nodded, “Sure is. I made the whole thing from scratch.”

" “Alright, who wants some cake!!!” All eyes turned in the direction of the announcement to see Jules' mom walk in with a superhero themed cake. All the kids charged forward, towards the short table where Mrs Hart had placed the cake and lit four candles. On getting to the table, the kids cleared the way for Asher, who felt so thrilled with the design of the cake. “Alright kids, let's sing the birthday song for the birthday boy!” Mrs Hart said, and a few parents gathered round to make videos with angles which captured only their kid and Asher.

“Harrison. Step away from the fence.” He stepped away from the fence. He looked at it for a moment—the eighty-one nails, the lanterns strung in tight rows like a military operation—and I could see on his face the particular expression of a man who knows he has overdone something and is not yet willing to admit it. It had ten candles on it, and Lucas’s name on one side, and Chloe’s name on the other, and a small wooden horse figurine on top that Chloe had picked out herself at a craft shop three weeks earlier because she had decided that horses were her personality now.

And Raine wanted to keep things real. The cake was beautiful. It was three tiers with white frosting and purple designs. It had the Harley Davidson logo drawn on it. The cake top was a bride and groom on a motorcycle. Underneath it read, "Ride with me forever"! "Ok my lovely bride, we need to go to the parking lot for your wedding gift from your husband!" Jax laughed. "Mmm, I love the sound of the husband part." Raine grinned. "I just got goosebumps!"

Not to mention that Shaquelle made a cake with four colors, dominant green with the hulk, yellow with batman, red with spiderman, blue and red from captain america. Everyone looked very happy until the event was over, and gave lots of gifts to those who came. And now it's Elvano's turn to sit among the piles of gifts with Shaquelle immortalizing on her camera. "I want a photo with Mommy and Uncle too." said Elvano innocently.

She opened the bag containing the candle and said with a smile, "Brother Jacob, take out the cake yourself. There are words on it." Jacob pulled out the cake and read, "Happy birthday to Jacob, who is 26 years old." Ashley winked, "I specially asked the clerk for an extra pack of candles." "Oh, right." Ashley picked up another plastic bag. "There is a birthday hat. Put it on." Jacob said with a laugh, "What?" Ashley looked at it and put it on his head, "This is shaped like a crown. You will be a queen today." "Hmm?"

Roxanne shivered in Hazel's arms. The Leightons wanted to yell at them. Wendy actually yelled at them, "Is that supposed to be a joke? His birthday's today! He's having a birthday bash at The Gilded Lounge!" "What? It's today?" Hazel and Anya stared at Wendy in dumbfounded shock. "It can't be today! You've got it all wrong! It's April 28th!" they argued. "We celebrated his birthday this year! I can still remember it clearly! We've given him presents! I got him Prada's crocodile leather shoes! Hazel got him a Bulgari charity-edition necklace!" Anya said vehemently, utterly confident about her answer.

I let myself in through the front door and reach for the light switch. The second the lights blaze on— "SURPRISE!" I nearly punch someone on pure instinct, my fist already cocked back before my brain catches up. The living room explodes with noise and light and people. Everywhere. Balloons, streamers, a fucking banner hanging across the wall that says "HAPPY BIRTHDAY CADE" in huge letters even though my birthday isn't for another week. And there's Quinn, front and center, hands clasped together, grinning at me with that mischievous look that means she's been planning this for days.
