ZACHARY’S POV Daphne ran back into her house the moment our bodies separated, her footsteps retreating fast- as though she was running from more than just me. The faint flush on her cheeks replayed in my mind, stirring something dangerous in my chest. I’d grown so used to her hatred that seeing her flustered felt unreal, like a mistake my heart wasn’t supposed to witness. “She’s going to be the death of me, and I know it already,” I said to myself, walking into the local gym.

She forgot how to breathe properly. Scars. Both of his wrists had dark slit scars on them. And the slits looked so deep and painful. She gulped but couldn’t get herself from looking away from his scarred wrists. Harry glanced at her only to pause seeing her frozen figure staring at something with a pale face. He followed her gaze and thought she’s looking at his food but then realization hit him. His scars. He chuckled lowly watching her looking at his scarred wrists with pained expressions. Her face looked like she will burst out crying anytime.

Somehow, deep in her heart, she knew that it would trap her friend. "Ah! Okay then, by the way, do you have something for his burn?" She asked her while holding Harry's hand. "Oh, blimey! Yes, dear. Of course. But let me remind you, the scar will never fade." "Why?" "See this?" She shows them her palm. Opening it, was a scar as clear as the day. It was round and the size of a medallion. Similar to Harry's burnt. "Oh, you've touched one before?" Harry asked, he could feel the dismay in his chest waiting to take over. Perhaps it only wanted to safeguard him, but there wasn't any danger. However, it settled there like a furious ball poking him towards his uncertainty.

I knew from now on that I would look ugly with a scar, but being reminded made me feel worse. "Oh my goddess! Look what they did to my baby!!" Daphne yelped in shock when she saw the gash. "Goddess! It's huge." She added, tears pooling up in no time in her eyes. She was always very emotional. I smiled at her and shook my head. "It's going to heal up soon, in two days, this should disappear" I reassured, but she shook her head. "A scar would still be left behind, El." The tears fell slowly from her eyes and I sighed.

He turned his back and left them astonished. Dejectedly, Daphne sat down in the chair. She still worries about the potential of losing her work as a result of what happened today. What will happen to her if that occurs? She was unable to control the tears that were welling up in her eyes. She saw his breathing becoming more constricted for a while, but he didn't pay little attention to it.

"What, is Mom not as important as some junk locket? You know what happens if her condition worsens." "I know." I cut him off, my voice cracking as I crouched on the floor. "No one knows better than me when she loses it." My old scars burned as I recalled it. Like a volatile child, she'd speak kindly one moment, and the next, brand me with a hot poker. The smell of scorched flesh haunted my nightmares. Andre fell silent, knowing how diligently I had cared for Evelyn, but a moment later, he hardened again. "I got it, you don't want her to get better."

He knew what my wolf was like when someone interrupted us, especially when the air in the room was so thick with her scent that a man could drown in it. Daphne’s body went rigid beneath mine. My hands were still hooked around her soft waist, my thumb pressed deep into the flesh of her hip, holding her flush against my chest on the edge of the war table. Her breath came out in short, ragged hitches, her cheeks flushed a dark, violent pink. The heat coming off her skin was like a fever, the only thing in ten years that could silence the rabid screaming inside my head. Stopping right now felt like pulling a serrated blade out of my own chest.

" She... She re-opened dad's case? Why? Isn't she the one who told me that I should stop fighting against that invisible enemy of us? Why would she... Do this?" I stood up even if I feel like I would fall in any moment. I accidentally passed by a mirror and saw my scar. The memories that I buried six feet under the ground starts to flash like a flood. The screams in pain, the culprit's laugh, dad's cry in pain, our maids' shouts, and my cries. God, I need to stop this again. If this kept on flashing back, I'll lost myself again. And I don't want that to happen.

I didn’t correct her. I sat by Daphne’s side, taking her hand in mine. The color was returning to her cheeks, and I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. Her eyes fluttered open, glassy with unshed tears. She bit her lip as her gaze landed on the scratches she left on my arms. “Don’t think about it,” I said softly, offering a small smile. “I’m okay.” Fresh tears filled her eyes. “Daphne, please,” I whispered, my voice cracking. “Let me in. Let us face this together. I can’t help you if you don’t let me.”

He really took a chunk out of her flesh. She noticed me staring at her injury. “This is a mere scratch,” but her fevered eyes told another story. “You’d better pray I don’t turn into your kind, because I will rip you to pieces the moment I do.” I sighed and shook my head at her. “Daphne, I wish things were different, believe me. I would rather fuck a pig than you. But if I don’t, Magnus would exile me.” “Touch me, dog, and you will regret it!” she snarled at me, lifting herself to her feet. She was as agile as a spider.
