Meguitte used a long-handled pair of fire-tongs, used to move pots around the home-hearth, in order to collect the rags from the basket and push them into the liquid, swirling them around within before lifting each piece out, and laying it over the ladder of twigs.
“Do you see?” She said to one of the slaves, who nodded, eyes wide and jaw loose. “Then you do, with care,” she told him. “And keep an eye on the drips. Do not get it on your skin and watch that they do not ignite as they dry. Although we have removed most of the debris from the soil, much will still catch fire under this spell, and if a fire reaches the cauldron… Well,” she shook her head grimly. “Then we all die.”
