Derek’s POV This is the D-day, the day of the dance. They’d covered the old town hall floor in glittering cloths and fake snow and hung crystal lights and fancy tiles, but under all of it I could smell wolves. Packs crammed together, trying to look like normal students in rented tuxes and cheap masks, pretending this was just a dance. Pretending they weren’t calculating every move and every glance. My tie was already strangling me, so I tugged at it, ignoring the looks from some of the teachers by the door. I wasn’t here for them. I wasn’t even here for the damn ball.

But the reality was that while that would be the case for some, others would go back disappointed, awaiting the next mating ball. A particular girl in the crowd, dressed in a gown which seemed to have been made from leaves, had her eyes darting through the hall. She looked to be in her twenties. I imagined she’d been to the previous year ball, and she’d been among the ones who’d gone home disappointed. “Would you like to dance?” Gideon questioned, but he seemed a bit distracted. The dance-floor was in the very middle of the hall. There, I’d be sure to draw lots of attention, I didn’t think I was ready for that yet.

“And now, for the moment we’ve all been waiting for! The Cotillion de Honor!” A ripple of excitement went through the younger crowd. Gayle rose from her chair, looking more elegant than ever. She glanced at me, a silent invitation, and I joined her in the middle of the ballroom. This was the dance we had practiced for weeks, a complex, elegant routine involving twelve partners, culminating in us rejoining.

Luna Renae’s aim is to keep me so occupied, I won’t be able to keep up with the tasks given to the contenders. I groan, tossing the rake into the wall. She opened the door and pulled out a simple red dress. “You can wear this today, and I will help you get ready tonight again. The ball is going to be quite the ordeal. Yale’s sister is returning home. It's her coming-of-age ball.” Jenna smiled, “What’s a coming-of-age ball?” she asked. Marissa smiled, “When a dragon turns 100, they can find their mate. So, it’s a ball to show off Princess Adleigh becoming of age.”

I love to dance and I am pretty sure that there will be lots of it on the party. The queen included on her letter that I have private dancing lessons today at the ball room. Wearing my flat shoes, I went towards the direction of the ball room and entered it, surprise to see a bald man wearing a onesie. Geez, it's almost hard not to gag of the sight.

The moment Shirley stepped into the place, she felt like she had stepped into the past. Many years ago, a masquerade ball was held here. As she was looking around, she saw Harry, dressed in a white suit, walking toward her. He wore a golden mask and looked like a knight descending from the heavens. Despite the mask, Shirley still fell for him at first sight. "May I have this dance with you?" Harry said, echoing the words she had said to him years ago. Shirley glanced down at his hand, and in the end, she placed her hand in his.

Maya, who was one of the event organisers, was checking the song list when Meredith and Raven walked into the room. "Are you guys serious about seeing the preparations?" Maya asked with a smile. "Not looking, more like curious," said Meredith. In the corner of the room, some students were learning to waltz. A couple of men and women moved gracefully to the beat, while others were still trying to adjust their steps. "If you're coming to the ball, you should dance," Maya said teasingly. Meredith squinted. "No one requires that." "If someone asked you out, would you say no?" asked Lucas, who had suddenly appeared from behind them.

"Which friend? Where is he?" Harry sighed, exasperation creeping into his tone. "I shouldn’t have let you drink so much. Come on." He tugged at my hand, but I wasn’t ready to leave. Instead, I pulled him toward the dance floor. "No, let’s dance!" I insisted, a burst of energy suddenly flooding me. Harry hesitated, but I wasn’t about to listen. "The party’s over, Oliver. Let’s go." I wasn’t about to give in. "No! Come on, let’s dance. And bring your friend too. We can all dance!"
