If this was a trap, better one of us fall than both. He'd argued. Of course he'd argued. But in the end, he understood. Some doors only open for one person. The bookstore was called "Between the Pages." A narrow storefront on a quiet street, windows fogged with salt air, a hand-painted sign creaking in the wind. I stood across the street for ten minutes, watching. Trying to see if this was real or another layer of the game. Then I crossed and pushed open the door. --- The bell above the door chimed softly.

Hazel leaned back casually, smiling as though my entire situation was a show for her. “Oh,” she said brightly, tilting her head with a mock-surprised expression. “You look good as a waiter. You should consider taking a job here.” Her voice dripped with sarcasm and her eyes glittered with cruelty. I stiffened, clutching the bottle tighter. “Here's the wine,” I said, my lips in a thin line. “Open it Arian. This is a restaurant, not a book club,” she said. “Book club?” he repeated, his gaze flicking between Hazel and me.

Like a flame in the hearth, I was sure that he could switch from warm and comfortably cosy to alight and dancing in a matter of seconds, and part of me wanted to be there to see it when it inevitably happened. “Well, there’s not that much to tell,” I said, cocking my head from side to side, considering. “Down here, that’s where Prue’s bookstore is. It’s not actually owned by anyone called Prue. Actually, an older man, Winston, runs it. I think it might be named after his wife, or his daughter.” I shrugged again. “I can’t remember.” Cyrus grinned. “You’re a really great tour guide, you know that? I mean it. Have you ever considered starting up your own business?”

The book launch for Emma's third novel took place on a crisp October evening at Elliott Bay Book Company, Seattle's most beloved independent bookstore. Emma stood behind the podium looking out at a packed audience of romance readers, fellow authors, publishing professionals, and friends who had supported her journey from struggling writer to bestselling author.

“Just listen to me and stay here! Understood?” Before Halsey can say anything else, Nathan sprints off after Kelso. She’s crestfallen and lingers near a pillar, waiting for Nathan to come back. Unbeknownst to her, a pair of beady eyes are observing her. “Whatcha looking at, Hastings?” Hans asks the British man sitting with him. “I want that girl,” Hastings says, pointing at Halsey. “I got some business to finish with her.” “Done!” Hans grins. “I’ll arrange for it tonight.” Hastings smirks. This will be interesting.

“Thanks. Gonna need brain-bleach to get rid of that image.” Cassie chuckles and takes a half-bow. “My pleasure.” I sigh, doing my best to repress images of Martha Wilkins (all three-hundred pounds of her) enjoying the latest Mills & Boon novel, say Midnight in the Desert, Midnight in the Summer, or, predictably, Midnight in the Harem. “All right, then. You’re free. Nothing coming until Monday morning. Got a shipment of comic books due. The York Book Emporium from Pennsylvania is sending us some of their overstock.”

It concentrated heavily around a small, newly opened bookstore on the corner. Jax kept his distance, slipping silently into the darkened alcove of a closed bakery across the street. He watched the glowing storefront with unblinking focus. The hanging wooden sign above the door read *The Bound Page*. Inside, the warm glow of fairy lights and brass reading lamps illuminated the cozy space. Jax’s gaze locked instantly onto the figure moving behind the front counter. She was completely unaware of the predator watching her. She was beautiful in an understated, frustratingly ordinary way—soft, slightly disheveled hair, determined eyes, and an aura of quiet, stubborn independence. She was stacking

Even the carpets and various furniture Hael had were black. ‘Goddess, does he even have a personality?’ Lacey scoffed. ‘There’s no color, no anything in here.’ Across the room, a bookshelf caught my eye. It was stacked top to bottom with books, most of them old and without titles. I slid one from its spot, a thick text with navy blue binding etched in gold. The inside of the book read, ‘Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.’ It wasn’t just the fact that Hael read books that made me pause, but the signed autograph on the inside cover.

She had most of her burger boxed up for later. Nathan smiled at her. “I’d love one.” Together they walked out into the night. Snow fell softly, decorating the trees and lampposts with a coat of white. It was still early despite the December dark, so all the stores were still open. Holly showed him the store that sold crystals to fix your chakras, the antique market, and the high end pet food store. “And here’s my dad’s bookstore,” she said at the end of the tour. They stood outside the old brick building with snow still falling gently around them.

The boutique Hazel had chosen was nestled between a high-end bakery and a vintage record store; its minimalist display featured a mannequin in a backless black dress. Hazel was waiting outside, scrolling on her phone, looking impossibly put-together for someone who'd also worked a full day. She glanced up as I approached and let out a low whistle. "Well, hello, stranger. Who are you and what have you done with my workaholic friend?"
