My feet cripples and I collapse on the van floor. A hand pick me up and throw me at the corner. They slammed the boy to my side. He wheezed. I gasp. His head hits my rib side, sending black spots to my eyes. I’m still coughing and gasping for air when a shoe heel pressed itself in my head. Forcing me to bend. “So it wasn’t that challenging to find you.” Adeline said, exerting force to her heel, bending me lower. I catch a crack of glimpse behind her shoe. Her blood red lips curl into a smile. A calculative evil smile. And I can’t suppress the shudder running through my spine. The groundkeeper has settled himself in the passenger seat at the front.

I wanted Killian back. Since Adeline demanded to be present at the next “war meeting,” Gunner decided it would be less suspicious if we had it inside the residence. Of course, he didn't hide his surprise when Adeline led us all to her orangery. “This place helps me calm down and concentrate,” she said. “It will be the best place for us to talk.”

Adeline’s grip on me loosened and she collapsed against the seat. I turned to see her body, lying limp, soaked in blood. Her eyes were wide, staring at me with a mix of shock and… betrayal? However, I soon realised that she wasn’t staring at me, she was staring at the person behind me, the shooter. I turned to see Rade. His eyes sparkled and he opened the car door, helping me out.

Everyone who tells her that they will do anything to understand Adeline is untrue. Adeline woke up the next day and noticed her sight went back to normal. It was like an immediate miracle. She decided that she should have someone to tell about her eye condition so that she could get an opinion. But who can she talk to about that? Her friend Chris wasn’t an exemption from her options, so she had the courage to go to his apartment before she went straight to work. She tried to knock on his door… but no one seemed to answer. Hope all this hasn’t upset him?” Adele ignored her. They walked until they came to a rundown house. “It used to be a beach house for a elderly couple who have both died.” Tina explained, pushing her in.

Before Valerie could finish her sentence, a loud, piercing scream echoed through the air, followed by several more gunshots. The noise was terrifying, sounding like someone was being tortured. Adeline turned to Valerie with her eyes now wide with fear. "That was definitely a gunshot, and judging by the scream, it is not good." He stormed out without another word. The door slammed behind him. I waited until the echo faded before pulling my phone out again. Still no reply from Adeline. She’d read it, I was sure of it. But she hadn’t said anything back. The little Canary that makes me even more intrigued. She wasn’t just some drunk girl who made a mistake. She knew what she was doing. Before Clavier could say anything, Adeline collapsed, and he rushed in to catch her body. “Adeline!” Clavier called as her eyes were slowly closing. He touched her forehead and felt her skin was burning hot as if she was grilled alive. There were red markings all over her arms. With her shaking hands, she reached for something inside the pocket of her jacket. “What’s this?” Clavier asked. “The drug...the First Elder’s blood used to produce the drug...and the research data….” Adeline replied softly before losing consciousness.

I could hear her anguished cries getting louder, the terror in her voice fueling my desperation to reach her. Finally, I burst into a secluded clearing, where I found her on her knees, surrounded by shadowy figures that were clawing and snarling at her. As I stepped closer, they turned to me, their malignant gaze lingering on me as I walked past them, feeling the cold, malevolent energy radiating off them as I approached Adelaide, I knelt in front of her. "Adelaide?" I whispered "It's alright, no one's going to hurt you ever again."
