Upon entering, my breath hitched.
Dominating the far wall was a massive oil painting, framed in heavy gold leaf. It was a portrait of a couple. The woman looked to be in her early twenties, radiant and ethereal in a flowing red silk dress. Her hair was styled in a perfect, classic bob, and she was laughing. She was being hugged from behind by a younger version of Eugene Whitmore, whose eyes held a light I had never seen in the man standing before me.
“Adeline Whitmore,” Eugene said softly, his voice thick with a reverence that made my skin prickle. “My late wife.”
