I drum my fingers against my desk, letting the silence stretch for a moment so I can recollect my thoughts and not ruin this anymore than I have. A few seconds pass. “Why don’t you take a breath for me, baby, and hand the phone back to Caleb. Then take yours and go into your room, I’d like to Facetime you.” Silence. One beat… two… three. “Fine.” The call ends. I immediately search Adaline’s name on my log and call her on Facetime. It rings once, twice, and on the third ring, she responds. Adaline is on her bed, her hair in a messy updo with a few strands framing her face, her pinkish-red lipgloss making her lips a little too tempting.

I grumbled some words and walked out on her. “You better walk safe mama else you’re not going to see your body”. She gave the last threat that broke the caramels back.
