“Get away from that throne.” Veyron smiled calmly. “You still think this is about power.” The elder’s corrupted eyes shifted toward Aria. “This is about evolution.” Kael moved beside Ronan immediately while drawing his blade again. “You caused thousands of deaths for this.” “No,” Veyron answered quietly. “The founders caused them centuries ago when they split the Heart apart instead of accepting what it wanted.” Another pulse erupted from the Failed Heart overhead. BOOM. The chamber walls trembled violently. “The Heart was never evil,” Veyron continued. “It only desired connection. But wolves feared losing control more than they feared loneliness.”

It felt like the heart had reached into the oldest part of me and put a knife against everyone I loved at once. But the wolves were not separate from us. That truth hit with the force of revelation. The black heart wanted division—human against wolf, instinct against choice, primal need against moral will. Instead, Ty and I reached in the same direction at once. Not toward each other.
