Rowan’s knees went weak. “No! This isn’t right! He… he’s just a baby!” Her chest tightened. “Why… why split them?”
A wave of heat, like the memory of fire, surged through her. She fell to the floor of the vision, feeling the twin pulses of the children’s hearts. One steady, warm, comforting. The other jagged, cold, but strikingly like her own.
The shadows twisted and merged, swallowing the second baby. Rowan reached, but the flame memory pulled her back, faster and faster, until she stumbled out of it.
