“Show me your heart, Rosemary Blackhollow. Show me what you’re willing to sacrifice.” The ground beneath me cracked and splintered, a deep, bone-chilling sound echoing through the wasteland. I staggered, trying to keep my balance, but a searing pain erupted in my chest. It felt as though claws were tearing through my heart, pulling me apart from the inside. A scream tore from my throat, raw and primal, as I clutched at the invisible force wreaking havoc within me.

*** I gripped my chest, taking quick breaths as I crashed to the floor. I blinked rapidly, fighting back the tears while struggling to ease my aching head. I fetched a glass of water and chugged down the liquid but the pain in my chest wouldn't cease, it felt like my heart had been pulled into a knot and both ends of the rope were being tugged in opposite directions. It gave a painful twist but I refused to cry because crying only meant that I had accepted their reality.
