"I picked the same church you two first got married in." I laughed and brushed his hand away. "You're so childish." "Helen!" a voice ripped through the storm. "Come out and see me!" Jeff had somehow broken through the first line of security. In the pouring rain, he held a soaked velvet box. Inside was a crystal ring—one of the cheap couple rings he bought at a street stall when we first married. "I found out I have late-stage stomach cancer… The doctor said I have three months at most…" His voice cracked. "Just come out and see me one last time, okay?"

The concrete there is tattooed to hell—hearts and initials, names carved with keys, the kind of mural that gets added to every summer. Someone had painted a moon on one column. Not artist-bright. Old, the gray kind that shows up when the light hits it right. I stared too long and it stared back. “You gonna introduce me?” I asked. Cearen smiled without his eyes. “You’re not ready.” “I’m clean,” I said. “Forty-two days.”

I know I should tell them where I'm going but I just need to be alone for a while. Drake and Archer find me at the park an hour later.
