My voice was calm when I spoke to no one in particular:
“Every empire falls twice, first to arrogance, then to fear. Let’s make sure ours does neither.”
Luca approached, headset in, scanning airspace the way soldiers never stop doing. “Press line ready. Adrian’s convoy just turned into the underground garage.”
I nodded. The sun crested, blinding for a heartbeat.
“If this is how power tests faith,” I whispered, “then let it try me.”
Luca extended a hand, not in salute, simply in silent promise. “Then let’s give them a show worth believing.”
