By the time we reached the passage, I was shaking. The entrance was barely a crack in the rock—invisible unless you knew where to look. Caspian slipped through first, then Kael, then me. Inside, darkness so complete it felt solid. "This way." Caspian's voice echoed slightly. "The passage leads to the lower dungeons. Seraphine's throne room is three levels up." "And her guards?" Kael asked. "Minimal in the dungeons. She doesn't expect anyone to get this far." Famous last words, I thought.

They descend deep into the heart of the mountain, where the air smells of ancient stone and dried lavender. In a small room filled with thousands of jars of seeds, they find Elder Hestia. She is so old her skin looks like the bark of an ancient oak, and her eyes are a milky, soft blue. She doesn't look up when they enter; she simply continues sorting tiny black seeds into a clay bowl. "I knew you would come, Alaric Sterling," she says, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. "You’ve brought the scent of the spring with you."

“I haven’t seen you here before.” “My son just started last week, and he’s already made a lot of friends. I’m Hera, by the way. That’s my son, Blazt, and my daughter Hestia. She seems to be friends with your daughter already.” I looked at the group of little girls and immediately recognized Hestia. She looked just like her mother. “Oh yes, that’s my daughter, Daphne. And this little one here is Yiannis, he’s nine months old,” I said, smiling.

She dropped the keys slowly before backing away. "You aren't going to kill me?" She asked. "What? Why would I do that to you?” I asked, surprised. “You would prefer that?” I continued, not quite sure why she would ask me that. "If you go up ahead on your right there's some stairs down the hall, they'll take you to the exit point," She said but I knew better than to trust her or anyone around here. "Oh well, Nope, I've already got my exit," I said as I pointed to the open window, making the girl look at me in disbelief.

I can't remember that I used my mana. Aesthelia's eyes roamed, scanning her dark surroundings. Torches are numerously hung; it seems that this place is well-maintained. When Aesthelia sees metal bars, she knows exactly where they are. She can't help but think of something worse, because the last time she was in the dark, something very traumatic happened. "It's an underground dungeon, isn't it?" Aesthelia asked. She has a phobia of the dark because there's nothing scarier than vampires rising to power. She appears to have gotten used to it by now, despite how difficult it is.

He nodded and quietly opened the door. It was so dark in the hallway, she couldn’t tell whether or not there were even any torches lit nearby as she tried her best to peer past the large form of the dragon slayer. He took a step out into the hall, holding the door for her. Nya slid between his side and the door, ducking beneath his arm, and hurried to the right as Slate closed the door behind them with a small thunk. She rushed down the dimly lit hall, spying torches every twenty or thirty paces. Whatever floor they were on, it wasn’t one the king frequented, she assumed. It was dingy, the ground dank and damp, the walls undecorated and cold.
