I belong to that demographic of middle-aged mothers who occasionally dabble in fanfiction, and so 'How to Train Your Dragon' has an extra-special place in my heart.

There is a wealth of creativity to be found in this fandom. Two fanfics that I particularly like are 'Becoming Lífþrasir' and 'I Hear Him Scream'. In 'Becoming Lífþrasir', we see what happens when Hiccup is taken in by dragons and 'I Hear Him Scream' is a thrilling and emotional tale of Hiccup, Toothless switching bodies.

Both carry you along on a wild ride and both do this much-loved tale the justice it deserves.

Hiccup from 'How to Train Your Dragon' is such an underrated hero, and his words hit differently when you're feeling like an outsider. One quote that sticks with me is, 'It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside that he can't stand.' It's from the first movie when he's talking about Toothless, but it applies to so many real-life situations—like when people judge others before really knowing them. That line made me rethink how I treat people.

Another one that gives me chills is, 'This is Berk. It's twelve days north of Hopeless and a few degrees south of Freezing to Death.' The way he delivers it with such dry humor while describing his harsh homeland makes you root for him immediately. It’s not just inspirational in a typical 'you can do it' way; it’s about resilience and finding lightness even in tough places. Hiccup’s voice is so relatable because he’s not this perfect hero—he’s awkward, flawed, but never gives up on what he believes in.

Finding good 'Astrid and Hiccup' fanfiction can take some digging, because not every platform treats the 'How to Train Your Dragon' fandom equally. AO3 is my first stop for consistently higher quality prose and more daring narrative experiments. Authors there seem more willing to explore post-movie dynamics or alternate universes where the peace treaties with dragons strain differently, and I've found some stunningly written slow-burn relationship studies that focus on their partnership as rulers of Berk.

Tumblr is less reliable for full stories but incredible for finding recommendations. Following a few dedicated HTTYD fan blogs often leads you to hidden threads where someone will gush about a decade-old fic on FanFiction.net that perfectly captured Astrid's voice. That site itself is a mixed bag—tons of abandoned works from 2015, but a few absolute foundational epics are buried there. I sometimes go back just to reread 'The Outcast and the Shield-Maiden' series, which nails their competitive-to-respectful early dynamic.

A strategy that's worked for me is filtering on AO3 by 'complete works only' and sorting by kudos, then checking the bookmarks of the authors I like. Their public bookmarks are often a curated list of similar-quality stories. Don't overlook crossovers, either. A surprisingly poignant one-shot exists where Hiccup and Astrid get thrown into the world of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and their bond is tested through that lens. It's those unique takes that make the search worthwhile.
