Haley’s POV: The sun had begun to dip lower, painting the sky in pale gold and soft pink. Lily was still in the water, practicing her kicks with Sebastian close by, while Jordan sat beside me, tossing small pebbles into the waves. Sebastian glanced toward the shore, one arm up to block the sun. “You know,” he called out, “I brought a few things for a barbecue. Thought we could make a little lunch here.” I blinked in surprise. “You did?”

In the summer, the sand can be too hot to stand barefoot on, but the early November sun is not strong enough to bake it to that degree. An uneven line of slimy brown kelp buzzing with tiny flies marks the high tide line. We carefully step over the wet, slippery strands and continue on toward the water, stopping just above the spot where the most recent wave has reached. The sand is firmer here, and moist and cool.

The next morning, Leo woke to find Silas already up, standing on the deck with a cup of coffee and watching the sunrise paint the sky in shades of pink and gold. Leo joined him, accepting the second mug Silas offered, and they stood together in comfortable silence as the world came alive around them. "You were on the coastal highway. What the hell were you doing there? Are you hurt?"

“Alright, you two, enough. One minute you’re fighting and the next you’re like best friends who can’t be separated.” Haley shifted Alex’s attention. “Look out the window, sweetie. See the ocean in the distance? This is Coldwater Bay. It’s different from the beaches you’ve seen before.” “Coldwater Bay?” Alex asked, his curiosity piqued. “Is the water cold all year?” “Not always,” Haley explained. “It’s only cold in the winter. During extreme weather, there can even be ice tides. Its unique geography creates this phenomenon. The seafood here is incredible, especially in September when it’s at its freshest and tastiest.”

Kaden inquired, looking up at her. “The tide-hold is where they keep captives they don’t want to kill yet. It’s underground but built into the cliff face, and part of it floods at high tide. If we wait until the tide pulls back, we can slip in before it fills again,” “That gives us… maybe forty minutes before the water rises,” “Thirty-five if the moon pulls hard tonight,” She cocked her head.
