Not a threat. Not a warning. A promise.

I promise. –The end–

The clouds parted overhead, revealing a few scattered stars. One shone particularly bright. Chase looked at it, lost in thought. "Ever read The Princess and the Frog?" My mind was blank. "What?" "There was this firefly crazy about a star," he explained. "And he named it Evangeline." I nodded dumbly. "Yeah, and then?" Along the shore, the waves had frozen in place, forming undulating layers of white. New surges shoved fresh snow forward in a rhythmic dance. "Nora," he murmured.

“I promise.” Then he walked away.

I search his eyes for a second then my eyes go down to his lips that are so close to mine. I gulp, looking up in his black orbs. “ Promise? ” I am still suspicious, but I think there is no harm in trusting him for once, even if manipulating and hurting people is his job. He chuckles breathily and shakes his head before saying. “ I promise. ”

In that moment, promises hung in the air, unspoken but understood. "I promise," I said, my voice filled with sincerity and determination. It was a promise to fight for her, for us, and to never repeat the mistakes of the past. The weight of my commitment lay heavy on my shoulders, but it was a burden I was willing to bear for the chance to mend what was broken and build a future together.

“I will be your hero I promise you that, Aira.” The promise he last made for me before everything shattered of what we knew then as our perfect life. The promise we made on the night of my tenth birthday, and all before that tragic accident, the misfortune departure, and my broken promise. “On my thirteenth birthday let’s meet here by then I’ll surely have the thing that you ever wanted, promise?” “Promise.” ‘BUT THEN.’ With the snap that echoes and suddenly once more. I am now in time and waking to the point where I am still begging, begging for you to not leave me and stay, just like you promise.

“We can get through this. But you have to promise me something.” He turned to her, voice softer. “What?” She swallowed. “Promise me you won’t become him again.” Enzo held her gaze for a long moment. “I promise.” But even as he said the words, a small part of him wondered if he could truly keep it. Because no matter how much he wanted to believe they had escaped, the past was always just one step behind

I could still feel it under my skin—like a signature, like a promise, like the moment a match thinks about being struck and decides it wants to be fire. “Paper,” I said softly, the word leaving a temporary fog on the window. “Promises.” And because I refused, on principle, to be the first to look away, I stood and let the city look back until dawn found us both.
