I dialed a number I had memorized from a news report three years into the future. "Hello?" a gruff voice answered. "Mr. Hale?" I said, my voice low. "I know who is going to win the Southview Development bid next week. I also know your rival company is about to be hit with a massive fraud scandal. If you want that information, I want fifty percent of the profit moved into an offshore account in the Caymans." Silence on the other end. "Who is this? How did you get this number?" "A friend," I lied. "Do we have a deal, or should I call the other side?"

" Kamal inquired: "What's their phone number?" He pulled out his own, ready to dial. The receptionist checked the computer and said: > "01603366336." Kamal entered the number and put the phone to his ear, but a voicemail played: "The number you are calling is not in service." Hisham Mirghani looked at the receptionist and said bluntly: "Thank you." Kamal nodded. The two generals left the hotel and got into the police car. The car roared forward, leaving the front of the Stars Hotel behind, carrying with it the generals' frustration and the burning anger it had built up inside them.

“Did you really think you could hide forever?” Lena’s blood ran cold. Who was this? Her fingers tightened around the phone. “Who is this?” she asked, her voice steadier than she felt. A soft chuckle. “You’ll find out soon enough.” The line went dead. Lena stood frozen, the phone still pressed to her ear. Her pulse pounded. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong. Or maybe not. Lena stared at the screen, her fingers gripping the phone tightly. Another stupid prank. She let out a slow breath, forcing her heart to steady. She wasn’t falling for this again.

She hung up the call immediately and blocked the prison’s number on Brett’s phone, before deleting every trace of it. “Who was that?” Brett asked. She gasped. “What?” “Who called?” He asked again. She swallowed a mouthful of saliva. “Huh…It was a prank call,” she lied. “I had to let them complete the nonsense they were saying before hanging up on them. Do not fall for such people.” He nodded and collected his phone back from her. He took a small comb and began to comb Hailey’s silky hair. “I am going to the office now,” Lovelyn said. “Could you drop Hailey in school for me?”

The voice of a lady resonates through the earpiece. "I got a message from this number." "I'm sorry, you got the wrong person." The lady says and hangs up immediately without any further word from us both. The minutes stretch into an agonizing wait, each passing second laden with anticipation. Finally, a reply appears on the screen, unraveling the tension. "Just kidding! It's a prank," it reads. "A prank? Is this a joke?" Relief washes over me, and Luciano offers a reassuring smile. "See? Just someone with too much time on their hands," he says, attempting to ease the residual tension.

Kelly rushes over taking the call without checking the caller ID. “Yes," she answered and waited patiently for her speaker to say something or state the reason for their call, but nothing came from the other end. “Hello.. hello” she called out yet again but the line was dead silent. Prank calls were not something she frequently got but connected with the mafia, nothing is ever a prang. “If you have nothing to say I will hang up” she threatened but no words came yet again. She was tired and did as promised. She walked back to the balcony taking the phone with her this time around. Days have passed since she was last touched.

The only difference is I was smart enough to put things in place to see that they remained that way. The phone chimed, and I reached over to the table to pick it up. The message didn't seem to make sense at first until the second one came. "We'll give you fifty million for Ryder Sumner's catalog in two days. No negotiation." I snorted at the obvious prank and wondered fleetingly how the person got my private number. I was about to put the phone away when it chimed again, and that's when I knew it wasn't a joke.

Closing the door, he pulled his phone from his pocket, dialed a number, and held it to his left ear. He ended the call before getting into the car. "Done," he said, waving his phone as he slid into the driver's seat and buckled up. Hank started the engine and drove out of the parking lot. My phone buzzed. I fumbled through my bag, found it, and saw an unlisted number calling. I waited, hoping it was a stray call. But the number popped up again. On the fifth ring, I answered. "Is this Lianne Soriano's daughter?"

It was another fake number. These virtual numbers could multiply by the minute, each tied to a different IP address—impossible to trace. The mastermind was calling her. Wendy pressed the button and answered, "Hello?" A cold, mechanical voice responded, "Are you there yet?" Wendy tightened her grip on the phone. "I'm here." "Have you seen the men I prepared for you tonight? You'd better behave and take good care of them!" Wendy let out a dry laugh. "I've been behaving, alright—I'm serving them right now."

What if he missed it? Then we would go again, I told myself. “Here!” He said finally and took my phone. When it began ringing, he handed it to me. “Hello?” A man said on the other line. Expecting s woman, my voice faltered. “Yeah, hello, is this the residence of Rachel Turner?” The man huffed in the background. “It’s been over twenty two years, you think it’s funny to make prank calls?” He bellowed and I cringed.
