Kage stood there with that same smug twist to his mouth, like he thought his words still had weight.
“You’re nothing more than a shadow of your parents,” he said, voice curling with disdain. “And you? You’ll never be even half of what they were.”
I stared at him, dead silent. Let it hang.
Then I smiled. Just a little.
“No,” I said quietly. “Because I’m not trying to be them. I’m trying not to become you.”
His smirk twitched, and wavered.
“I’m still the Beta, Kage. No matter what happens behind those closed doors, no matter what princess waltzes into this territory, Rhysand will still always need me. I’ve earned my place.”
