Book Two: Shadowstorm Rising Chapter Four: Into the Dark They burned the bodies at dawn. I closed my eyes and searched for the Flame. It was still there—hot, wild, waiting. I reached for it. It burned my skin, but I held on. The shadows got closer. One of them jumped at Kelvin, but he shifted into his wolf form and bit into it. The shadow shrieked and vanished like smoke. “They can be hurt!” Kelvin shouted.

That night, I read until my eyes blurred. The pages were filled with ancient script, but the drawings told their own story—two figures locked in battle: one made of fire, the other of shadow. Beneath them, the earth cracked open and swallowed the world. They were born of the same spark, the text read, but one sought to consume while the other sought to protect. And when the balance was lost, the Fire and the Shadow turned on each other. My breath caught as I flipped to the next page. A symbol burned there—the same mark that glowed on my wrist whenever my power rose. The text beneath it was smeared, but a few words stood out:

We stopped at a small clearing ringed by blackened trees built a fire from the last dry wood we could scavenge low flames that barely pushed back the dark. Flame slept between us green light soft vines loosely curled around our wrists. She hadn’t woken since dusk, but every so often a vine would twitch reaching north then recoiling as if afraid. Kael sat close silver eyes reflecting firelight breath pluming white. “She felt it,” she said quietly. “The shadow.” I nodded hand resting on Flame’s back. “The vines shivered. Like they were scared for the first time.” Kael looked at me eyes dark, pupils blown.

Smirk sharp as shattered crystal. “Didn’t I give you one just as grand last week? What’s there to envy?” His fingers tightened on her waist, backing her against the wrought-iron pergola draped in jasmine. “Play your part. Don’t slip around Lena. Everything she has?
