“You have 48 hours, Nina.” I stared at Enzo in disbelief, and a scoff escaped my lips before I could stop it. “48 hours. Two days to make a potentially life-altering decision.”

A crowd of zombies had already poured in from there. As the screams echoed, I switched off the monitors, lay down on my bed, and picked up a book. It wasn't a long read; I could probably finish it in three or four hours. By then, everything outside should be over. … When I closed the book, four hours had passed. It was the longest I had ever spent reading a book. The idea that I'd gained a little more knowledge left me feeling quite satisfied. When I pulled up the feeds again, bodies were scattered all over the safe house. Many infected were drifting aimlessly through the building.

Or she would lose everything. The unknown number buzzed again, lighting up the dark. Another message. > Unknown: "You have 48 hours." Claire's heart hammered in her chest as she stared at the screen. Forty-eight hours... To escape. To survive. The countdown had begun. And deep down, Claire knew: The walls were already closing in.

Outside the war room windows, the sky is shifting from black to grey—dawn coming whether we’re ready or not. Forty-eight hours. That’s all we had left. But right now? We’re just two people holding each other while the world burns. I think that’s enough.

But now… Now, Sophie’s room seemed like the closet. This room was enormous—nearly the size of the entire upper floor of our house alone. A large four-poster bed with luxurious velvet canopy drapes sat smack dab in the middle of the space, right on top of a beautiful plush rug that looked to have been woven from the softest fibers known to man. A stone fireplace sat against the far wall, already warm and crackling with a fire. There was an entire seating area there, along with a bookshelf filled with books alongside it.

Fabian roared as he grabbed the bottle of liquor and poured it toward my daughter’s mouth. The glass doors of the hotel suddenly shattered. Several military jeeps rammed inside, followed by more than a dozen police cars, sealing off the entire lobby.

A long time later, Mason's phone finally ran out of battery, and the screen went dark. He was still sitting alone in the house he had bought back, letting the night swallow him whole. Our story had already ended the moment he took the bouquet from my hands. And he hadn't even had time to say goodbye. The End

Evan started, but his sentence was cut short as someone burst into his office without knocking on the door. Astrid Smith fluttered to Evan's side like a colorful butterfly. "Evan, I came all this way to have lunch with you… Oh, you're already eating? It looks delicious! Did your housekeeper make it?" Evan absolutely loathed it when people barged into his office unannounced. Once, an intern had forgotten to knock during an emergency, and Evan had fired them on the spot. Even I had to go through several layers of security clearance just to bring him lunch every day.

Chapter Fifty Seven: Forty-Eight Hours Kael was hungry. That was where we started. Not with the charge. Not with the forty-eight hours. Not with three territories northwest and an inter-territorial council headquarters built on the valley site and whoever had buried a criminal filing inside forty minutes of false documentation.

The apartment door remained open. Rain drifted through the hallway in the cool morning air. James turned the brass pocket watch over in his hand. No engraving. No manufacturer’s mark. Just worn brass… …and frozen hands pointing to 4:17. Charlotte unfolded the note again. The Fourth Door opens at 4:17. Don’t be late. She read it twice. Then a third time. “It doesn’t say morning.” Darrien looked at the wall clock. “It doesn’t have to.”
