So he obeyed.
The first time Oliver threw him into a fight, Jake was seven. Small, underfed, shaking. His opponent was older—twelve, bigger, meaner. A boy who had already learned that pain was just a lesson waiting to be beaten into someone else.
Oliver stood at the edge of the ring, arms crossed, voice cold. “Win or you'll eat grass tonight.”
However, his frail and twig-like body didn't stand a chance.
The older boy knocked him to the ground in seconds. Punched him until his vision blurred, kicked him until he coughed blood. The concrete was cold beneath his cheek, his body broken and shaking. Oliver didn’t stop the fight. He didn’t pull Jake up. He just watched.
