One Night, No Names
I stayed quiet, holding the line with nothing but expectation.
โโฆRight,โ I said eventually, though there was resistance buried in it. โIf thatโs how you want it.โ
โIt is,โ Mike replied, without hesitation.
Another beat of silence passed, thinner now, as something stretched too far.
โOkay,โ I muttered.
Mike nodded to himself. โGood.โ
There was nothing left to say. No goodbye, no attempt to soften it. I pulled the phone away and ended the call, the screen going dark in his hand.
For a second, I just stood there, listening to the faint hum of the world around me, the distant sound of a car passing, the whisper of wind along the pavement.
