Then, slowly, the footsteps started to fade. The voices grew distant, their frantic swearing becoming just an echo in the darkness. I didn’t dare move, not yet. We waited in the suffocating silence, listening, barely breathing. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, there was nothing. No shouting. No footsteps. Just silence.
I exhaled shakily, my whole body trembling from the strain of keeping quiet. Chris leaned closer, his voice soft but tense. “They’re gone, for now.”
