Bernadette explained, her voice low and steady.
"What?" It sounded like a riddle.
"You just have to stay calm, let it flow, Eleanor. The plant will connect with you. Stay focused, give it clear intent, and it will follow your command."
I shut my eyes, taking a deep breath, and spread my hands over the flower pot. I focused my mind, pushing out all external distractions, on what I wanted the plant to do. Heal. Grow. Resuscitate. I kept trying, my concentration absolute, waiting for a surge, an indication, an awakening of some kind. But nothing. I felt only the rough clay of the pot, the dry, lifeless petals. My frustration grew, a hot spark in my gut.
