They certainly weren’t making any attempts to hide their presence, and my breathing sped up as I considered what their plan for us could be.
I wasn’t sure about crawling into the small tunnel, and I recognized I was beginning to hyperventilate at the thought of forcing myself into the dark space.
“Zoe!” Gage uttered fiercely, grasping my shoulders as he sought my eyes, going on, “We’re going to be okay, but I need you to go first. We have to move now, honey. I’m right behind you. Just remember to breathe.”
He fastened a headlamp on my head as he spoke, and I concentrated on slowing my breathing as he’d suggested, knowing I didn’t have a choice if I wanted to survive.
