I traced the lines of the tattoo again, grounding myself in its familiarity.
He exhaled, sharp and heavy. “I shouldn’t have marked you,” he said. “It was manipulative. I see that now.”
“It was,” I agreed. Then, softer, more honest than I had ever been, “But I loved it.”
His head snapped up. “Why?”
“Because you’re the most important person in my life,” I said simply. “And I wanted something that tied me to you, even if you never asked for it. You deserved better than my fear. Better than my doubts.”
