Summer POV I felt a wave of uneasiness wash through me as we got closer to the house, my heart was beating faster and something was definitely off with the air, the bright weather had suddenly turned sour. As we got closer, strangely my ears caught some strange noises. "Stop!" I ordered and the driver halted the car looking at me with questions in his eyes. "It's okay Mr Will's, I just want to grab something from a nearby supermarket" I lied, smiling at the man who was clearly not convinced. "And you can go home, I will be back shortly," I said firmly. "But miss" He tried to protest "No buts Mr Will's, I will be back shortly, trust me on this one"

In the end, the inquisitive one won but first, I listened for footsteps and when I could make out none, I got off the bed and went for the book, flicking its first page open. The only person who could give me a book was Zena but it was also weird, what kind of book it was. It wasn’t the usual one we both read and enjoyed. It was some sort of self-help book and its title was even more weird. “Kicking trauma’s butt with style!”

I immediately looked at Key and Damian, realizing that this time it was the two of them who saved me from danger. "Sorry, I wasn't paying attention. I too feel like this place is a little dirty and doesn't suit me being clean!” I defended myself, obviously, because I didn't feel wrong. "What's your problem? You don't usually act disgusting like this!" Damian also asked, I then looked at him in annoyance. Does not matter. Most importantly, I can attract Key's attention. “I think I love book coffee dates.” I lift my head from the book I’ve been stuck on page forty-two for five minutes. Not that ‘Normal People’ by Sally Rooney isn’t good. It’s painfully good. But trying to hold up this masquerade is frying every single brain cell I own. One wrong sentence from me and proof, busted.

“It feels like hell.” “Sometimes healing does.” I stared at the books behind his head. I wanted to throw them. I read until my eyes burned and my head ached. Nothing. Not one single record of an alpha being marked from the inside out. Not by a mate. Not by anyone. My frustration grew sharp and ugly. “That’s impossible,” I said aloud, voice echoing softly. “Something like this does not just happen without precedent.” I looked around more to see if there was something I was missing… I looked toward the inner safe and saw a book. The book did not sit with the others. It rested alone on a lower pedestal, darker than the rest, its cover smooth like stone but warm when I stepped closer. The title shimmered faintly, letters shifting until they settled.

My opinion is fixed. He’s not so bad. I don’t know why he didn’t call the police, but the point is that he didn’t. I know things didn’t work out for me, but I’m not so hateful to think that they all deserve death and misery. At first, I did, but not anymore. I open my book and continue reading it even though I can’t seem to concentrate. I force through it and then in a few moments, I completely forget Damson’s fit and how it made me feel.
