My brain was still somewhat foggy from the effects of whatever it was that had me in a mess before I woke up here. “It’s been four days. Interdimensional travel is never easy on a body, especially the body of a Human.” The kind voice said. “What? Four days? How?” I murmured, trying not to sound too alarmed. I was supposed to have amnesia, remember? I bit back the urge to call out for Rowen, but I wasn’t about to give up any information. I may only be a Human, but I'm not stupid. I know how to survive.

Getting into the torture chamber was far easier than we’d anticipated. It was so easy, in fact, that we were on the alert for danger even more than normal. It took time for my eyes to adjust to the dim lighting. When I finally did and was able to move about without fear of bumping into something and bringing attention to our presence, I headed for the small cages along the back wall. There were six cages in all. Two were empty. I moved close enough to see the occupants in the other four. Only one was a human from my world. He was in the very last cage in the dank and darkest corner.

Thomas sat close enough that our knees touched, and Jeremy stretched his arm across the back of the couch behind me. Warmth moved through my chest. Then four voices filled my head. Mate. I groaned. “No. Absolutely not.” Four confused men stared at me. “If I’m dating four men, I am not also dating the four voices living inside their heads. Eight boyfriends is where I draw the line.” Jeremy fell sideways laughing. And for the first time since arriving at the Hawthorn house, surrounded by four impossible men I was apparently destined to love, I thought maybe impossible didn’t have to mean terrible.

She turned, and to her surprise, it opened softly. Inside it, was another key, large and gold. “Take it,” he said. “It belongs to you.” Caitlin reached in and took the key, her mind racing. It was heavy, smooth. She could feel an incredible power coming off of it. “It is one of the four keys,” the man said. “Only you can find the other three. When you have all four, you will meet your father. And he will give you the Shield. “You are on a very sacred mission,” he added. “You must find him. For all of us.”

My body moves to stand up. "Stay down Kitty." I moan standing up again, his hands pushing me down as I fight back. I watch as he moves, my body running for the door, his hands stopping me and pulling me back in. His hands push me down over the table, the rope wrapping around my body. "You wanted to be a brat; well you're getting punished like one." I moan as the rope holds me down over the table. "Four whips witch, count with me." I laugh slightly, unsure why, something about four is weird, usually, it is three, five, or ten, but four?

Jaxon read aloud. "When the false mother falls, the true gate wakes." Silence. Then Maddox murmured “I hate books.” Calder took the Codex from Jaxon and read the next line forming beneath it. "Four bloods. One heir. Return what was lost." The pulse under my palm kicked once. All three males froze. Then looked at me. Then at my stomach. Then at each other. “Oh no.” Jaxon murmured. “What?” I snapped. He pointed between me and the stairs. “You’re not the key, if that makes sens.”

With one final grimace in my direction, Rowan wrapped his arm around her shoulders and swept her out of the building. My head was already hurting, and it had nothing to do with the rising din of voices around me. Just a few hours ago, I was a human living in suburbia with a family who treated me like a servant—not a fantastical creature from a storybook who was the center of attention. And just a few hours ago, I had one boyfriend, Daniel. Even if he cheated on me with my stepsister, there was only one. Not three “mates”. “Four,” the voice in my head corrected me. “You have four mates, although the fourth isn’t here tonight. I wonder who he could be…”
