I'm spinning, spinning faster and faster. Finally, a burst of light overwhelms me, and I land on a soft surface. I open my eyes and take in my surroundings. I'm in a room with stone walls. The ceiling is high, and there are torches hanging from it. The flickering flames cast eerie shadows across the room, and on the other side of the room is a wooden door. I get up, my muscles aching from the fall, and survey my environment. Besides the torches, there is nothing in the room. No furniture, no windows. Nothing that suggests this place is anything but a prison.

I hadn’t planned to say anything. The sentence had just fallen out in the comfortable morning haze. “Four of us total,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “I’m the youngest, the last child.” It wasn’t the full truth, but it wasn’t a complete lie either. We were four. Aurelia’s eyebrows rose. “Four brothers? That’s a big family. Are you close?” “Too close sometimes,” I said. I reached for her hand and laced our fingers together, needing the anchor.

The trunk was re-opened, a needle was jabbed into my arm, and the world went black. On a soiled looking mattress with stuffing exposed in several locations, that was placed on a rusty looking bedframe in the corner, lay Megan. Like me, she was naked and trussed spread eagle. Unlike me, she was bloody and bruised. “Megan,” I managed to get past my hot and dry tongue. “Megan, can you hear me?”
