I had to find her first. I closed my eyes briefly and let my ears travel through. I could hear them storming. I could hear the leaves rustling. But nothing that sounded like her. Try harder, Alexo. I mumbled to myself. Finally I caught ear of something. It sounded like the heartbeat of my child. I know for sure because I have heard it not once. I pulled my eyes apart, bringing myself back to reality then head towards where the heartbeat came from. The leaves let out sounds as I moved on them but I paid no attention to its warning of me being quiet.

Just emptiness. I pressed my palm to the ground, but there was no texture. It was like touching light itself. I didn’t know if I was standing on something solid or floating in the middle of nowhere. “Hello?” My voice echoed softly, like it didn’t belong to me. “Is anyone here?” Nothing. Only the faint hum of air that didn’t feel real. Then I heard it—a single, steady heartbeat. My heartbeat. But it was faint, uneven, like something inside me was struggling to keep going.

His voice was steady and low, flat as an undercurrent beneath ice. My heart lurched in my throat. At my strongest, even with Victor at my side, I had barely managed to hold him off. And now, battered and broken, I was nothing but an ant before him. The instinct to survive drowned everything else. My fists unclenched, and with trembling fingers, I grabbed the hem of his pants. My hoarse voice shook with desperation. "Alright. Take me away now."

I could hear my own heartbeat pounding in my ears, each thump louder than the last. Noah's face went slightly pale.

Hailey’s POV The first time I heard the heartbeat, I cried so hard my chest hurt. I had told myself I would be strong. That I would take everything quietly now. That tears belonged to the past version of me who had begged to be loved. But the moment the sound filled the small examination room, something broke loose inside me. Thump. Thump. Fast. Determined. Alive. Then the doctor tilted the screen slightly, his brows knitting together as he adjusted the probe.

It felt like he caught me doing something embarrassing. "Your heart is racing." he said, calm as if he were commenting on the weather, "You alright over there, little one?" I froze. Because... how? My hand lifted on instinct to my chest, like I could physically hold my heartbeat still. "How can he hear that?" I thought, my mind scrambling. The fire was crackling, the house was old and creaky, there were two other people in here breathing. How could he possibly... Then the words caught up with me.

“You don’t hear anything, Alpha?” “Wait.” I tried to concentrate, but my eyes never left her until I heard something like a beat. Fast and rhythmic— a heartbeat. It was not hers, neither mine. I gasped, gulping. She chuckled and smiled while I remained speechless, but she could hear my heart galloping against my ribcage. “Is that—” breathless, I asked. I didn’t want to be hopeful until it was just my imagination. “Yes, Alphasshole. It is.”

For once, after wandering with countless souls for countless centuries, I feel a thud in my heart. My heart beats for her. "Be still my beating heart," I muttered with a smile on my face, placing my hand on the left side of my chest and patting it gently. My first heartbeat. I was still in bliss when I took in yet another whiff of air. Suddenly, there was a change in the air; something strange sprang up. I feel it rotating and rumbling at the center of the earth, reverberating with the forces of lost souls. I hear the cries, the despair, the agony. I see hell surfacing. I hear the clash Of swords and the voices wailing. I hear hell.

As I listened in closer, two rapid heart beats were heard inside, racing at my touches. Wait a minute...theirs hearts. I can sense everything about them! It's almost as though they are communicating with me through the beats in their heart. My son and my baby girl.

My heart starts to beat faster and I don't dare to breathe while I have put all my focus on listening for the sound. Minutes go by before I hear it again and this time closer than before!
