"You're going to be fine, My miracle, I will never lose you." The distant sound of my heartbeat slowly made its way into my subconsciousness, bringing my mind back to life. I listened carefully to the heartbeat, following the sound. The beating slowly turned to a beeping, a machinery beeping. It increased with every step closer I got to the location of the sound until I snapped my eyes open with a gasp. Damn.

All that was there were his serious eyes and perfect face. He leaned in closer and | could smell his breath. It smelled like rain and mint gum. | was breathing heavily now, my heart pounding harder and harder. His eyes were trained solely on my lips, then wandered back to my eyes. His lips brushed lightly against mine and | sucked in a breath, my lips tingling. | suddenly tilted my head sideways and looked away from him. Pushing his body away, | got up hurriedly and stepped out of the ring. "Where are you going?" he asked, climbing down after me.

I placed my hand on his chest too "Hear that?" I asked and watched his eyes lit up at the sound of his heartbeat which was beating faster than usual "I hear it Mummy. It's so cool!" I smiled at his innocent excitement. Even in the midst ofu chaos, he managed to always make me smile and forget my problems for a while “You know,” I said, standing back up and ruffling his hair. “When you’re happy or excited, your heart beats faster. It’s like it’s dancing with joy.”

I finally knew why I could hear the baby’s whisper! I finally found a way to change my life path and to survive!

The thought was so fast that I barely had time to change it when my palm tingles. A subtle heat spread outward; it wasn’t dramatic, or explosive… but was steady and unmistakably there. That was when I heard it… a beating sound in my ear… like a faint drum. Or a… pulse. “Do you hear it?” Maeve asked, her voice barely above a whisper, and I knew it was because she didn’t want to break the concentration, but she also needed to know where I was at. “My father’s heartbeat?” I asked without hesitation. “Yes. I feel it.”

Maybe there was nothing there after all. I was just about to pull my hand away when I suddenly froze. There was a sound. Faint. Soft. Unfamiliar. My breath caught in my throat as I stilled completely, my heart beginning to race again. I pressed my hand more firmly against my stomach, my senses sharpening as I focused on that tiny sound. And then I heard it clearly. A small, steady heartbeat. Not mine. My eyes widened, and my entire body went still as the realization hit me all at once. It was real. There was something there. Something alive.

I ask. “That’s your pup’s heartbeat. It’s a healthy and strong heartbeat too.” She says.

My heart pounded so loud I could hear it in my ears. Shit.

Her stylish blouse and fitted blazer concealed any hint of a baby bump, making it impossible to tell she was already four months along. Then I focused my hearing. Beneath the chatter of the guests, the clinking of wine glasses, and the soft music drifting through the room, I heard it. A tiny heartbeat. Fast. Strong. Steady. My own heart skipped. For a split second, a strange sense of déjà vu washed over me. The tiny heartbeat echoed through my mind, tugging at something buried deep inside me, as though I had heard that precious rhythm before. A flash of warmth and longing surfaced before disappearing just as quickly.

I peeked an eye open, frowning. “I think I'm hearing two heartbeats.”
