Exposed At The Altar
Close enough to remind me I wasn’t alone.
The nurse continued speaking softly, explaining measurements and updates, but most of it blurred together in my mind.
Because all I could focus on was that screen.
That movement.
That reality.
And then—
A sound filled the room.
Soft.
Fast.
Steady.
I froze completely.
My eyes widened slightly before instinctively shifting toward the nurse.
She smiled gently.
“The heartbeat.”
Everything inside me went still.
The sound continued filling the room, steady and undeniable, and suddenly it felt like something cracked open quietly inside my chest.
