"Aiden, my shoulder—" Grace tried to take a step but stumbled. Blood was soaking through the makeshift bandage. Her vision blurred from pain. Then she heard it. A sound like breaking glass but deeper, louder, coming from beneath her feet. She looked down. A thin crack running across the ice. Getting wider. "The ice," she whispered. Another sound. Sharp. Violent. The crack spread faster, branching out like lightning. "Grace, run!" Aiden grabbed her good arm. "Get to shore!"

Hannah’s head hangs to the side, revealing her pale neck. The rest of the ceiling shatters, and the sound it makes rips through my ears, causing them to pop and bleed. A piece of crystal as large as Hannah’s bed hurdles to the ground, heading right for Cassian and Hannah. “CASSIAN!” I scream as Granger hauls me back, his eyes wild and wide as the room around us fractures. Adrian asked, his hands pausing on his laces. "Let me see your left foot." Ethan gently gripped the toe of Adrian's boot, tilting it toward the harsh fluorescent light. He pointed to the structural seam. "Look at this. The locking mechanism is completely loose. If you take a hard turn on the ice, this blade is going to snap right out of the holder."
