I shrugged and pulled him to get ice cream from the fridge. I can never take dreams to heart, it was just an illusion which happens in our sleep. It sounded more of a fairy tale to me. Dennis must have watched something that triggered such thoughts, I was going to have to check his surroundings for anything like that. I didn’t want my baby to be scared of anything.

Pixie I’m doing some laps around the rink waiting for my partner, Issaac, to finish lacing up. Normally I am a solo skater. But one of the skaters I helped train needs a partner for the pairs skating competition coming up. His normal partner got hurt and can't compete. If he doesn’t compete they will lose their slot. So not only am I training myself for my next competition I’m training for his. We have to do a long and short program for him and I have the same for mine. It is rough on my body but we are talking about the semi finals here. Neither one of us can afford to miss it. His slot is on the first day. Mine is on the second so I can rest in between. So that is a plus.

Counted ceiling tiles and thought about ice, about falling, about the dangerous freedom of wanting something Dante hadn't designed. Sleep came slowly. When it did, she dreamed of the lake, frozen solid, her father walking across it, turning to wave her on. She stepped onto the ice. It held. She walked toward him, toward the center, toward the place where the water was deepest and the ice was thinnest, and she wasn't afraid. She woke to morning, to choice, to the continuation of a game she had renamed as living.

Cade I'm alone on the ice, the way I like it. It's dark already—past practice hours, past when anyone normal would still be here. But I like being here at night. Alone. Just me and the ice and the sound of my skates cutting through the silence. Usually it helps clear my head. Usually. But for some reason tonight it's not working. My mind is still racing, still spiraling, still replaying fragments of memories I can't quite grasp.

Not with Nora’s car probably pulling into her driveway right now, her mind racing the same circles as mine. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, but the rink dreams came anyway, empty ice, two sets of skates carving parallel lines that kept drifting apart no matter how hard I pushed to close the gap.

As they skated I remembered Desiree, her dancing just melts away my heart, she looked so glorious. I stood and just watched with a bright smile on my lips, I knew so well how to ice skate I had trained the whole time when I was in business school. They had these fun activities during winter and ice skating just happened to be one of them.

*** Sleep came easily that night and was without nightmares or noise. I couldn't remember when last I slept like that on my bed. In my dream, I was back on the ice, skating without falling, the cold air biting my cheeks, Ryans skating beside me, our laughter echoing off the rinks And when I stumbled, he caught me, as always. “Careful,” he said with that teasing smile that melted everything. In the dream, I smiled back at him and whispered, “Don’t worry. I’m not afraid to fall anymore.”

He left first, and my chest ached. That night, I dreamed of him. Just us. On the ice. No gear, no Coach, no one else just the two of us. Jeans, T-shirts, ordinary clothes, nothing holding us down. It felt strange, liberating, more exposed than skating naked on ice ever could. I woke up with my pulse still racing, my mind replaying the dream, every curve and shadow of him burned into my thoughts. And I knew it wasn’t just a dream. It was a warning. A promise. Something dark, raw, and unstoppable had already begun.

Telling myself I fell asleep in a park was way better than saying than trying to explain how I got here. “ Yes, that's what it is! It's a dream!” I said aloud, convincing myself.
