I crawled to him and hauled him upright, my arms locking around him as if letting go would unmake him entirely. “I’m here,” I said hoarsely. “I’ve got you.” His hands fisted in my clothes. “You shouldn’t have followed.” I pulled back enough to look at him. “There was never a version of this where I didn’t.” The place we’d fallen into was not a place at all. It was an inside.

“Not now.” My gaze settled on him fully, steady. “I left for two hours.” “That’s not the point.” “No,” I said quietly. “It isn’t.” And in that moment, it clicked. If he had been the one following me, this wouldn’t be his reaction. He wouldn’t be asking. He would already know. The realization settled cleanly. It hadn’t been him. Which meant someone else had eyes on me. Someone who had already made one move. The weight of it didn’t show in my expression, but it locked into place all the same.

“That’s final.” I stared at him for a moment, grinding my teeth together. His gray eyes were hard and deliberate in the dim light, and the look on his face brooked no argument. Of course he would insist on coming with me. He was always stubborn like this, ever since we were children, and especially since we had become adults. I supposed I suspected as much, but I thought I could slip away before he found out I had made the decision to leave on my own. Even so, a small part of me was somewhat glad to see him here. I tried to ignore that feeling, though, reminding myself that we could only ever be tentative allies. Nothing more.

His expression was impossible to read, but something about it made goosebumps appear on my skin. How long has he been there? Did he watch the entire thing unfold? Fuck—that is not the impression I was hoping to leave on him. Before any thoughts could go through my mind further, he turned around and disappeared off, Elias as always by his side, trailing off along with him. I swallowed thickly, releasing a shaky breath.

I whispered. He lifted his head and looked at me. I saw hope in his eyes. Hope that I’d be alright with all of this. Hope that I’d still want to be with him, and I did. I wanted to be with him. I needed to be with him because just like him, I didn’t feel whole without him; I didn’t feel like myself. I pulled him over to the bed and sat down beside him.

It still hurt to think about what had happened, what I had lost, but I knew that with him by my side, I would get over it, I could get better because he shared that pain with me, he was as bad as I was. Only with him had I been able to feel better, only with him had I felt good again, and I wanted to feel good with him. I sighed, put the key in the lock, turned around, and opened the door. I entered the house and put the keys in the basket next to the door with a sigh, and then I turned around. I froze. My breath was missed as I saw what was in front of me.

The way he looked at me with concern made me understand why he seemed extremely hesitant and cautious about this. “Do you think that I won’t be able to take it?” I asked bluntly. “Are you absolutely certain that you can take it?” Hayden asked in return. “I’m not sure…but…if you’re there with me, I’m sure that I’ll manage somehow…” I replied after some thought.
