Instead, I built myself a luxurious log cabin halfway up the mountain.
I also installed a massive floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the mountain's ski resort.
At night, I often wrapped myself in a blanket and sat by the window, watching the snow drift down. The moon and the stars lit up the snowy expanse. Now and then, I could hear the cable cars going past, the clinking of the steel cables sounding crisp in the night.
This peaceful, comfortable life made me forget all about life back in Navarino. Yet, during the long, lonely nights, I would still think of Cesare.
