If He Had Been With Me Novels & Stories

he said and with that, he was gone. No one had to tell me because with what I'd witnessed, I knew I was in deep shit.

We were in this together, and I had my family with me, every step of the way. I just had to hold onto that. Hold onto them.

He was kind and thoughtful, skilled and steadfast. If he were a human, I admitted to myself, I’d have thrown myself at him weeks ago.

What could I have done without her? "And I also think joining you people won't be a bad idea, right?" A deep voice interjected and immediately I knew it was him.

It's the first time we've sat together like this without being at each other's throats and it feels strange but not entirely unwelcome. "How are you holding up?" I ask finally. "I'm not." He laughs but there's no humor in it. "I keep thinking about all the ways I failed her, all the moments I should have been there and wasn't. I was supposed to be with you two but I stayed in that room with Aria instead. If I had been there I could have—" "To be fair, you couldn't have known they were coming," I cut him off. "None of us knew."

If she had agreed to come with me, I would have scheduled what I was about to do for another time. Releasing a sigh, I eventually backed out of the scene and headed for Sherlock.

I’m not sure what just happened or where he went, but I know at least part of him knows who I am. Part of him is here with me.

“I literally chased you the whole time. Even now, it feels like I’m forcing you to be by my side and any day now you will walk away.” “What the hell...” I paused, taking a step back. “I chose to be with you even when it could have gotten me killed, still could get me killed. I have a fucking timer in my head and would’ve saved myself time and gotten the Rosetta if I had just stuck to the bloody plan!” “So you regret being with me?” His brows knotted, eyes hurt, and I cursed, turning my back to him. We were doing it again. We were fucking doing this again.

How could I have been so blind? I drove without any direction, lost in my own sadness as new tears fell. When I finally pulled over, I was parked outside the gate to his house. My body and mind were so tied to him that they had led me right back. I sat in my car and just looked at the building. If only he had told me the truth, everything could have been so different.

Enzo… If only I had just listened, neither of us would have been in this mess, and now, because of me, he was going to die. Oh, God! What have I done?
